Generic name: estropipate
Drug class: Estrogens

Dose: 1.5 mg per tablet
Mechanism of action: Estropipate is a synthetic estrogen that binds to estrogen receptors in target tissues, leading to the regulation of gene transcription and modulation of physiological processes such as reproductive function, bone density, and lipid metabolism.
Drug usage cases:
- Management of moderate to severe menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes and vaginal atrophy
- Prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women
- Hormone replacement therapy in women with ovarian failure or other conditions causing estrogen deficiency
Drug contraindications:
- Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
- Liver disease
- History of heart attack, stroke, or blood clot
- History of hormone-related cancers, such as breast, uterine, or vaginal cancer
- Known or suspected pregnancy
Side effects:
- Headache
- Vaginal itching or discharge
- Changes in menstrual periods
- Breakthrough bleeding
- Bloating
- Stomach cramps
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Breast pain
- Thinning scalp hair
- Fluid retention (swelling, rapid weight gain)
- Chest pain or pressure
- Sudden numbness or weakness (especially on one side of the body)
- Sudden severe headache
- Slurred speech
- Problems with vision or balance
- Sudden vision loss
- Stabbing chest pain
- Shortness of breath
- Coughing up blood
- Unusual vaginal bleeding
- Pelvic pain
- Lump in the breast
- High levels of calcium in the blood (hypercalcemia), indicated by nausea, vomiting, constipation, increased thirst or urination, muscle weakness, bone pain, and lack of energy
Warnings:
- Increased risk of blood clots, stroke, heart attack, and certain cancers (breast, uterine, ovarian) associated with estrogen therapy
- Not recommended for use in pregnancy
- May increase the risk of developing uterine cancer; report any unusual vaginal bleeding immediately
- Should not be used to prevent heart disease, stroke, or dementia
- Regular monitoring by a healthcare provider is essential during treatment
- Discontinue use prior to major surgery or prolonged bed rest
Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding:
Estropipate is contraindicated during pregnancy due to potential harm to the developing fetus. If pregnancy occurs during treatment, contact a healthcare provider immediately. Estropipate may also affect breast milk production; consult a healthcare provider before using this medication while breastfeeding.
