Description
Generic name:
Cefadroxil
Drug class:
First-generation cephalosporin antibiotic
Dosage form:
- Capsules: 125 mg, 250 mg, 500 mg
- Oral suspension powder: 125 mg/5 mL, 250 mg/5 mL
Root of administration:
Oral
Dose:
- Adults: 1–2 g/day in one or two divided doses (125 mg–500 mg every 12–24 hours)
- Children: 25–50 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 12–24 hours
- Renal impairment: adjust based on creatinine clearance
- Varies by indication; consult label.
Mechanism of action:
Cefadroxil inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and death.
Drug usage cases:
- Skin and skin structure infections
- Pharyngitis and tonsillitis
- Uncomplicated urinary tract infections
- Uncomplicated gonorrhea
- Streptococcal pharyngitis
- Off-label: acute otitis media, dental prophylaxis, Lyme disease (early localized)
Drug contra indications:
- Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporins
- History of severe immediate hypersensitivity reaction to penicillins or β-lactams
- Previous anaphylactic reaction to any β-lactam antibiotic
Side effects:
- Gastrointestinal: diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia
- Hypersensitivity: rash, urticaria, pruritus, anaphylaxis
- Hematologic: eosinophilia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia
- Hepatic: elevated AST/ALT, cholestatic jaundice
- Renal: interstitial nephritis
- C. difficile–associated diarrhea
- Vaginal candidiasis
- Headache, dizziness
Warnings:
- Serious hypersensitivity reactions; discontinue if rash or anaphylaxis occurs
- C. difficile–associated diarrhea may range from mild to life-threatening
- Adjust dose in renal impairment; monitor renal function
- Cross-reactivity possible in penicillin‐allergic patients
- Prolonged use may result in superinfection
- Monitor complete blood count in prolonged therapy
Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding:
Cefadroxil is categorized as Pregnancy Category B. Animal studies have not demonstrated risk to the fetus; human data are limited but no increased risk of congenital anomalies has been observed. Cefadroxil is excreted in human milk in low concentrations; it is generally considered compatible with breastfeeding. Monitor breastfed infants for diarrhea or fungal infections.
