Description
Generic name: guaifenesin
Drug class: Expectorants
Dosage form: Oral liquid
Root of administration: Oral
Dose: Adults and children 12 years and over: 2–4 teaspoonfuls (10–20 mL) every 4 hours as needed. Do not exceed 6 doses in 24 hours. Children under 12 years: Consult a doctor before use.
Mechanism of action: Guaifenesin works by thinning and loosening mucus in the airways, clearing congestion, and making breathing easier.
Drug usage cases:
- Relieves chest congestion caused by the common cold, flu, or chronic bronchitis.
Drug contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to guaifenesin or any component of the formulation.
Side effects:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Allergic reactions: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
Warnings:
- Consult a doctor before use if you have a cough that occurs with too much phlegm, or a chronic cough such as occurs with smoking, asthma, chronic bronchitis, or emphysema.
- Stop use and consult a doctor if cough lasts more than 7 days, comes back, or is accompanied by fever, rash, or persistent headache.
- If pregnant or breastfeeding, ask a health professional before use.
