Generic name: Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol
Drug class: Contraceptives, Oral Combination
Dosage form: Oral tablets
Route of administration: Oral
Dose: 0.15 mg levonorgestrel and 0.03 mg ethinyl estradiol for 84 days, followed by 0.01 mg ethinyl estradiol for 7 days
Mechanism of action: Suppresses ovulation, thickens cervical mucus, and alters the endometrial lining to prevent pregnancy
Drug usage cases:
- Contraception
- Management of heavy menstrual bleeding
- Treatment of endometriosis-related pain
- Management of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) symptoms
- Reduction of ovarian cysts
- Improvement of acne
Drug contraindications:
- Known or suspected pregnancy
- History of thromboembolic disorders (e.g., deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism)
- Uncontrolled hypertension
- Active or history of liver disease (e.g., hepatitis, cirrhosis, liver tumors)
- Known or suspected breast cancer or other estrogen-dependent tumors
- Undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the product
Side effects:
- Irregular or heavy uterine bleeding
- Weight gain
- Acne
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Elevated blood pressure
- Breast tenderness
- Depression
- Decreased libido
- Vaginal discharge changes
Warnings:
- Smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular events; avoid smoking, especially if over 35 years old
- Monitor blood pressure regularly; discontinue if significant hypertension develops
- Discontinue if signs of thromboembolic events occur (e.g., sudden severe headache, chest pain, leg swelling)
- Use caution in women with a history of depression; monitor mood changes
- May affect glucose tolerance; monitor blood sugar levels in diabetic patients
- Not recommended for use during breastfeeding
- Discontinue if jaundice or other signs of liver dysfunction occur
- Use caution in women with a history of gallbladder disease
- May increase the risk of certain cancers; discuss risks with a healthcare provider
Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding:
Ashlyna is contraindicated during pregnancy. If pregnancy occurs during use, discontinue immediately and consult a healthcare provider. During breastfeeding, the use of Ashlyna is not recommended due to potential effects on milk production and infant health. Alternative contraceptive methods should be considered during this period.
