Generic name: Phenazopyridine hydrochloride
Drug class: Miscellaneous genitourinary tract agents
Dosage form: Tablets (95 mg, 99.5 mg)
Route of administration: Oral
Dose: Adults and children over 12 years old: Take 2 tablets 3 times a day with or after meals as needed for up to two days. Take with a full glass of water. Do not use for more than 2 days (12 tablets) without consulting a doctor.
Mechanism of action: Phenazopyridine hydrochloride is excreted in the urine, where it exerts a topical analgesic effect on the mucosa of the urinary tract, providing relief from urinary discomfort.
Drug usage cases:
- Relief from urinary pain, burning, urgency, and frequency associated with urinary tract infections (UTIs).
Drug contraindications:
- Allergy to phenazopyridine hydrochloride.
- Kidney disease.
- Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency.
Side effects:
- Headache.
- Dizziness.
- Upset stomach.
- Reddish-orange discoloration of urine (harmless but may stain clothing and contact lenses).
- Staining of soft contact lenses (may be permanent).
Warnings:
- Do not use for more than 2 days (12 tablets) without consulting a doctor.
- Consult a doctor before use if you have liver or kidney disease, allergies to foods, preservatives, or dyes, or had a hypersensitive reaction to phenazopyridine hydrochloride.
- May interfere with laboratory tests, including urine, glucose, and ketones tests.
- Do not use while wearing soft contact lenses; phenazopyridine can permanently stain them.
