Generic name: amlodipine besylate and atorvastatin calcium
Drug class: Calcium channel blockers and HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins)
Dosage form: Tablets
Root of administration: Oral
Dose: The recommended starting dose is 5 mg of amlodipine and 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily. The maximum recommended dose is 10 mg of amlodipine and 80 mg of atorvastatin once daily. The dosage may be adjusted based on individual patient needs and tolerability.
Mechanism of action: Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker that relaxes blood vessels, improving blood flow and reducing the heart’s workload. Atorvastatin is a statin that inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, decreasing cholesterol production in the liver, thereby lowering LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels while increasing HDL cholesterol.
Drug usage cases:
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Angina pectoris (chest pain)
- Hyperlipidemia (elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels)
- Prevention of cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke in patients with risk factors
Drug contraindications:
- Active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations in liver enzymes
- Hypersensitivity to amlodipine, atorvastatin, or any component of the formulation
- Pregnancy and lactation
Side effects:
- Common: headache, dizziness, fatigue, flushing, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, muscle pain, ankle swelling, palpitations, increased blood sugar levels, increased liver enzymes
- Serious: rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown), liver dysfunction (e.g., jaundice, dark urine), severe allergic reactions (e.g., swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing), hypotension (low blood pressure), cognitive impairment (e.g., memory loss, confusion)
Warnings:
- Monitor liver function tests regularly during treatment
- Use caution in patients with a history of muscle disorders or those taking other medications that may increase the risk of muscle problems
- Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of liver damage; limit alcohol intake
- Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may interact with atorvastatin, leading to increased drug levels; avoid grapefruit products
- Use caution when driving or operating machinery until you know how the medication affects you
Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding: Caduet is contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation due to potential risks to the fetus and nursing infant. Women of childbearing potential should use effective contraception during treatment. If pregnancy occurs, discontinue the medication and consult a healthcare provider.
