Generic name: desloratadine and pseudoephedrine
Drug class: Upper respiratory combinations
Dosage form: Extended-release tablet
Root of administration: Oral
Dose: One tablet (5 mg desloratadine and 240 mg pseudoephedrine) once daily
Mechanism of action: Desloratadine is a selective H1 histamine receptor antagonist that reduces allergic symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy/watery eyes, and hives. Pseudoephedrine is a sympathomimetic amine that acts as a nasal decongestant by constricting blood vessels in the nasal passages, leading to reduced nasal congestion.
Drug usage cases:
- Relief of nasal and non-nasal symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis, including nasal congestion, in adults and adolescents 12 years of age and older.
Drug contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to desloratadine, loratadine, pseudoephedrine, or any other component of the product.
- Narrow-angle glaucoma.
- Urinary retention.
- Patients receiving monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors or within 14 days of stopping such treatment.
- Severe hypertension or severe coronary artery disease.
Side effects:
- Common: Drowsiness, dizziness, headache, nausea, loss of appetite, insomnia, dry mouth, sore throat.
- Serious: Light-headedness, tremors, severe weakness, irregular heartbeats, seizures, severe skin reactions (fever, skin redness, small pimples).
- Hypersensitivity reactions: Rash, pruritus, urticaria, edema, dyspnea, anaphylaxis.
Warnings:
- Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disorders, including hypertension and coronary artery disease.
- May cause blurred vision and impair reactions; avoid driving or hazardous activities until effects are known.
- Alcohol may increase drowsiness; avoid alcohol consumption during treatment.
- Use with caution in patients with diabetes, hyperthyroidism, prostatic hypertrophy, or increased intraocular pressure.
- Not recommended for use in patients with renal or hepatic impairment.
Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding: The safety of desloratadine and pseudoephedrine during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not well established. It is recommended to consult a healthcare provider before using this medication during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
