Generic name: cyclobenzaprine [ sye-kloe-BEN-za-preen ]
Brand names: Amrix, Comfort Pac with Cyclobenzaprine, Fexmid, Flexeril
Drug class: Muscle relaxant
Dosage form: Tablet, Extended Release Capsule
Route of administration: Oral
Available Dose:
- Tablets: Commonly available in 5 mg and 10 mg.
- Extended Release Capsules: Typically available in 15 mg and 30 mg.
Mechanism of action: Cyclobenzaprine acts on the central nervous system (CNS) to produce its muscle relaxant effects. Although the precise mechanism is not fully understood, it is believed to involve a reduction of tonic somatic motor activity, influencing both gamma and alpha motor systems.
Drug usage cases: Cyclobenzaprine is used short-term to treat muscle spasms associated with acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions. It is usually used along with rest, physical therapy, and other measures.
Drug contra indications: Contraindicated in patients with hyperthyroidism, congestive heart failure, heart block, arrhythmias, or within 14 days of taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Use with caution in elderly patients and those with a history of urinary retention, glaucoma, or increased intraocular pressure.
Side effects: Common side effects include drowsiness, dry mouth, fatigue, and dizziness. Less common but more serious side effects can include arrhythmias, confusion, and hallucinations.
Warnings: Cyclobenzaprine may impair mental and/or physical abilities required for performance of hazardous tasks, such as operating machinery or driving a motor vehicle. Alcohol and other CNS depressants may enhance the sedation and drowsiness.
Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding: The effects of cyclobenzaprine during pregnancy and breastfeeding are not fully established. It should be used only if clearly needed and after careful consideration of the risks and benefits.
Cyclobenzaprine is an effective treatment for muscle spasm relief, especially when used as part of a comprehensive recovery program including physical therapy and rest. However, due to its potential side effects, especially on the central nervous system, it should be used under strict medical supervision.
