Dosage form: tablets/chewable tablets/capsules/powder
Root of administration: oral
Dose:
- 81 mg: This is a low dose of aspirin that is commonly used to prevent blood clots and reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.
- 325 mg: This is a standard dose of aspirin that is commonly used to relieve pain, reduce fever, and prevent blood clots.
- 500 mg: This is a higher dose of aspirin that is sometimes used to relieve more severe pain or reduce fever.
Mechanism of action: It works by inhibiting the production of certain chemicals in the body called prostaglandins.
Drug usage cases: Ecotrin is a salicylate that is used to treat pain, and reduce fever or inflammation. Ecotrin is sometimes used to treat or prevent heart attacks, strokes, and chest pain (angina). This medicine should be used for these conditions only under the supervision of a doctor. Ecotrin may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Drug contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity: Ecotrin should not be used in individuals who have had a severe allergic reaction to aspirin or any other NSAIDs.
- Active bleeding: Ecotrin should not be taken by individuals with active bleeding, such as bleeding ulcers or bleeding disorders.
- Children with viral infections: Ecotrin should not be given to children or teenagers who have or are recovering from a viral infection, as it may increase the risk of Reye’s syndrome, a rare but serious condition that can cause liver and brain damage.
Side effects: Ecotrin may cause serious side effects. Stop using Ecotrin and call your doctor at once if you have:
- ringing in your ears, confusion, hallucinations, rapid breathing, seizure (convulsions)
- severe nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain
- bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds
- fever lasting longer than 3 days
- swelling, or pain lasting longer than 10 days
Warnings: Ecotrin can cause Reye’s syndrome, a serious and sometimes fatal condition in children.
Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding: Taking Ecotrin during late pregnancy may cause bleeding in the mother or the baby during delivery. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
You should not breastfeed while using Ecotrin.
