Description
Generic name: Simethicone
Drug class: Anti-foaming agent
Dosage form: Oral tablets, chewable tablets, softgels, liquid suspensions, and drops
Route of administration: Oral
Dose:
- Adults and children 12 years and over: 40–125 mg after meals and at bedtime, as needed (three to four times a day); do not exceed 500 mg in 24 hours
- Children under 12 years: Consult a doctor before use
Mechanism of action: Simethicone reduces bloating, discomfort, or pain caused by excessive gas by decreasing the surface tension of gas bubbles, allowing them to combine into larger bubbles that are more easily eliminated from the gastrointestinal tract.
Drug usage cases:
- Relieves excess gas in the stomach or intestine
- Alleviates bloating, pressure, pain, fullness, or a stuffed feeling due to gas
Drug contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to simethicone or any component of the formulation
- Infants under 6 months of age
- Glaucoma
- Obstructive uropathy
- Unstable cardiovascular status in acute hemorrhage
- Obstructive disease of the gastrointestinal tract
- Myasthenia gravis
- Severe ulcerative colitis
- Reflux esophagitis
Side effects:
- Generally well-tolerated with minimal side effects
- Rare cases of allergic reactions, including rash, itching, or swelling
- Gastrointestinal discomfort such as nausea or diarrhea may occur in some individuals
Warnings:
- Use with caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal disorders
- Consult a doctor before use if pregnant or breastfeeding
- Keep out of reach of children; in case of overdose, call a poison control center or get medical help right away
- Do not use in children under 6 months of age
- Do not exceed the recommended dosage
