Dose: Typically, 158 mg twice daily, taken with food.
Mechanism of action: Jatenzo provides exogenous testosterone, which replaces or supplements the natural hormone in men with low or absent testosterone levels. It binds to androgen receptors, promoting the development and maintenance of male secondary sexual characteristics and normalizing testosterone levels.
Drug usage cases: Jatenzo is used to treat adult males with hypogonadism who have low testosterone levels due to specific medical conditions.
Drug contra indications: Jatenzo should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to testosterone undecanoate or any component of the formulation, in men with breast cancer or known or suspected prostate cancer, or in women who are pregnant or may become pregnant.
Side effects: Common side effects include elevated blood pressure, headache, and increased hematocrit. Serious side effects may include:
- Cardiovascular events: Increased risk of hypertension, myocardial infarction, and stroke.
- Polycythemia: Elevated red blood cell count.
- Liver toxicity: Potential for liver enzyme elevation and liver damage.
- Prostate disorders: Risk of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer.
Warnings: Jatenzo can increase blood pressure, necessitating regular monitoring and management of hypertension. It can also elevate hematocrit levels, requiring periodic monitoring to prevent polycythemia. Patients should be monitored for signs of liver toxicity and prostate disorders.
Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding: Jatenzo is contraindicated in women who are or may become pregnant due to the risk of virilization of the female fetus. It is also contraindicated during breastfeeding. Women of childbearing potential should avoid contact with Jatenzo.
