Description
Generic name: lactase
Drug class: Digestive enzymes
Dosage form: Caplets, chewable tablets, drops
Root of administration: Oral
Dose: 3 caplets or 1–2 chewable tablets with the first bite or sip of dairy; repeat after 30–45 minutes if consuming more dairy
Mechanism of action: Converts lactose into glucose and galactose, facilitating digestion in individuals with lactase deficiency
Drug usage cases:
- Management of lactose intolerance symptoms
- Facilitation of dairy consumption in individuals with lactase deficiency
Drug contra indications:
- Hypersensitivity to lactase or any component of the product
- Phenylketonuria (PKU) due to potential phenylalanine content
- Children under 4 years old
Side effects:
- Allergic reactions: rash, hives, itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing
- Gastrointestinal discomfort: bloating, gas, diarrhea (rare)
Warnings:
- Use exactly as directed; do not exceed recommended dosage
