Mechanism of action: Omeprazole inhibits the hydrogen-potassium ATPase enzyme (the proton pump) in the parietal cells of the stomach, reducing gastric acid secretion.
Drug usage cases: Omeprazole is used for the treatment of acid-related conditions such as gastric ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Drug contraindications: Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to omeprazole or any of its components.
Side effects: Common side effects include headache, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, and constipation. Rarely, it may cause allergic reactions.
Warnings: Caution is advised in patients with hepatic impairment. Omeprazole should be used with caution in patients with a history of liver disease.
Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding: Omeprazole is categorized as a pregnancy category C drug. It should only be used during pregnancy if needed. Omeprazole is excreted in human milk; therefore, caution should be exercised when administered to breastfeeding women.
