Mechanism of action: Oxaliplatin forms cross-links within and between DNA strands, inhibiting DNA replication and transcription, leading to cell death.
Drug usage cases: Oxaliplatin is used for the treatment of colorectal cancer, often in combination with other chemotherapy drugs.
Drug contraindications: Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to oxaliplatin or other platinum-containing compounds.
Side effects: Common side effects include peripheral neuropathy, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and myelosuppression. Rarely, it may cause severe allergic reactions and pulmonary fibrosis.
Warnings: Caution is advised in patients with renal impairment and in those who have had previous treatment with other platinum-based drugs. Regular monitoring of blood counts and liver function tests is recommended.
Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding: Oxaliplatin is categorized as a pregnancy category D drug and can cause fetal harm. Women should be advised not to become pregnant while receiving oxaliplatin. It is unknown if oxaliplatin is excreted in human milk; therefore, caution should be exercised when administered to breastfeeding women.
