Route of administration: Topical (applied to the skin)
Dose: Apply a few drops of the solution to the affected area(s) of the scalp or other body areas as directed by a healthcare provider. Typically used twice daily.
Mechanism of action: Fluocinolone acetonide is a corticosteroid that works by reducing inflammation, itching, and redness in the skin. It achieves this by inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators and suppressing the immune response in the treated area.
Drug usage cases: Treatment of inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses, such as psoriasis or eczema.
Drug contraindications: Known hypersensitivity to fluocinolone acetonide or any component of the formulation. Infections of the skin, such as bacterial, viral, or fungal infections, unless treated concurrently. Use in children under 2 years of age (unless directed by a physician).
Side effects: Common: Skin irritation, burning, stinging, dryness. Serious: Adrenal suppression (especially with prolonged use or use on large areas), skin thinning, striae (stretch marks), secondary infections, hypopigmentation.
Warnings: Avoid prolonged use or application to large areas of the skin to reduce the risk of systemic absorption and associated adverse effects. Avoid use on broken or infected skin. Inform your doctor if you experience worsening of symptoms or signs of an infection. Regular monitoring for potential side effects, such as skin thinning or adrenal suppression, may be necessary.
Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding: Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is unknown if fluocinolone acetonide is excreted in breast milk, so consult your doctor before using this medication while breastfeeding.
