Generic name: sertaconazole [ ser-ta-KON-a-zole ]
Drug class: Topical antifungals
Brand Name: Ertaczo, Dermofix
Dosage Forms: Cream
Route of Administration: Topical
Dose: 2% cream
Mechanism of Action:
Sertaconazole is an imidazole antifungal that works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes. By disrupting the cell membrane, sertaconazole causes leakage of cellular contents, leading to cell death and thereby treating fungal infections.
Drug Usage Cases:
Sertaconazole is used for the topical treatment of superficial fungal infections, including tinea pedis (athlete’s foot), tinea cruris (jock itch), and tinea corporis (ringworm) caused by susceptible strains of dermatophytes. It is also effective against cutaneous candidiasis and seborrheic dermatitis. Sertaconazole is specifically designed for use on the skin and should not be used in the eyes, mouth, or other mucous membranes.
Drug Contraindications:
Sertaconazole is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to sertaconazole or other imidazole derivatives. It should not be used in patients who are allergic to any component of the formulation. If irritation or sensitivity occurs, treatment should be discontinued. It is for external use only and should not be ingested or used intravaginally.
Side Effects:
Common side effects of sertaconazole may include mild skin reactions at the application site, such as burning, stinging, itching, redness, or dryness. Serious side effects are rare but require immediate medical attention if they occur, including:
Signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing). Severe skin irritation or worsening of symptoms. Signs of skin infection, such as pus, warmth, and swelling
Warnings:
Sertaconazole should be used with caution in patients with a history of skin sensitivity or allergic reactions. It is important to use the cream as directed by a healthcare provider and avoid prolonged use. The cream should not be applied to broken or damaged skin unless directed by a healthcare professional. Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
Use During Pregnancy or Breastfeeding:
Sertaconazole is categorized as pregnancy category C, meaning risk to the fetus cannot be ruled out based on animal studies, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. It should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed and prescribed by a healthcare provider. It is unknown whether sertaconazole is excreted in human breast milk; therefore, caution is advised when used by nursing mothers.
