Route of administration: Oral
Dose: 250 mg, 500 mg, or 750 mg once daily, or as directed by a healthcare professional
Mechanism of action: Niacin, or nicotinic acid, is a B vitamin that aids in the function of the digestive system, skin, nerves, and heart health. It is clinically proven to raise high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglycerides, thereby supporting heart health.
Drug usage cases:
- Management of high cholesterol levels
- Reduction of triglyceride levels
- Increase of HDL cholesterol levels
- Adjunctive therapy with other cholesterol-lowering agents, such as statins
Drug contraindications:
- Known hypersensitivity to niacin
- Active liver disease
- Active peptic ulcer disease
- Active bleeding disorders
Side effects:
- Temporary flushing, itching, and tingling sensations
- Headache
- Gastrointestinal discomfort, including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
- Skin rash
- Dry skin
- Cough
- Skin discoloration
- Elevated liver enzymes
- Hypotension upon standing (orthostatic hypotension)
Warnings:
- Monitor liver function tests regularly during therapy
- Use caution in patients with a history of liver disease, kidney problems, heart disease, chest pain (angina), gout, or diabetes
- Flushing may be minimized by taking the medication with a low-fat snack and cold water, or by taking an aspirin or ibuprofen 30 minutes before dosing
- Avoid alcohol, spicy foods, hot beverages, and hot showers around the time of dosing to reduce flushing
- Discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional if experiencing persistent flu-like symptoms, loss of appetite, dark-colored urine, muscle discomfort or weakness, irregular heartbeat, or vision problems
